“Wild elephants are noble, honest, loyal and courageous. They are strong and powerful. But they are wild elephants. They can’t be a hummingbird. And they can’t be a gazelle. They can’t be delicate. They can’t be things that they’re not. If people do not understand you, then you’ll just have to hang out with other wild elephants.” Debra Sands Miller

•May 15, 2012 • Leave a CommentSo you no longer want to remain quiet
You can’t any longer
And your survival depends
On prying open that intrinsic wound
Again
Turning wounds into wombs
Fertile
Planting seeds of healing on compliant soil
Moving the locus
Inspired by the desire
To unlearn
Trace back steps
Of a cobblestoned past
When you dreamed of climbing trees
Instead of ladders to “success”
Tracing back the steps
When you dared to color outside of those lines

I know you’ve got
Just enough faith
To fill a thimble
Cardial entreaties
Prayers of deliverance
From that foggy place
From that space between blessings
Ask to remain there
But only for a time
The lesson is deep
And healing
It is not a time for dotted I’s
Or crossed T’s
Just a love litany
Between a soul
And its maker
Because Sometimes We Could All Use A Little Encouragement

We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” Marianne Williamson

•April 12, 2012 • Leave a CommentIt was an old abandoned opera house
That first pulled you in
Intrigued you the most
Downtown nightlife
The way that the city sighs
Through vents in cracked sidewalks
You knew that there was something in it for you
Something that you couldn’t quite name
Until years later
You mounted your bike
Night after night
Dark Champion hoodie
Fire escapes
A black Magnum marker
Cracked windows
Alleyways
You…and the night
You…and your spray can
The sweet solitary moments
Sweet anonymity
Initial tastes of freedom
It was an old abandoned opera house
That first pulled you in
Had to prove it to yourself
That you were more
More than what you were expected to be
…knew that there was something in it for you
Something that you couldn’t quite name
Until years later
